Waimea Bay

North Shore beach famous for massive winter surf

Waimea Bay on Oahu's North Shore is one of the most famous big-wave surf spots in the world. In winter, swells regularly push waves past 30 feet, drawing top surfers and spectators who line the road above. The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, held here only when conditions are truly enormous, is surfing's most prestigious event.

In summer the bay transforms completely -- the water goes flat and calm, perfect for swimming and jumping off the large rock on the left side of the beach. The drive from Honolulu takes about 45 minutes along the Kamehameha Highway, which winds past pineapple fields and smaller North Shore surf breaks.
