Kailua Beach stretches for about 4 km along a perfect crescent bay, with powder-soft white sand, turquoise water, and the green Koolau mountains rising behind. The surf is gentle, the trade winds are reliable, and offshore reefs keep the swells from breaking too hard — which makes the beach ideal for swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, and learning to windsurf or kitesurf.
The southern end (Kailua Beach Park) has the parking, restrooms, and rental shacks; the further north you walk, the quieter it gets. Flat Island (Popoia), the small flat-topped islet about 200 metres offshore, is a bird sanctuary you can paddle out to on calm mornings. Sunrises here are exceptional — the beach faces east directly into them.
