Nā Mokulua (The Mokes)

Nā Mokulua — universally known as 'the Mokes' — are the two near-identical, conical islets that sit a mile offshore from Lanikai Beach. They are by far the most photographed feature of the windward coast. On a calm morning a confident kayaker can paddle out to the larger of the two (Moku Nui), where a small protected sandy beach faces back toward Oahu.

The islets are volcanic remnants and rise sharply out of the water. Both are seabird sanctuaries — landings are permitted only on the small beach of Moku Nui, and only below the high-tide line. The crossing takes about 30–40 minutes from Lanikai Beach in calm conditions; do not attempt it if the wind is up or the surf is large. Kayak rentals are available in Kailua town.

A story
Both islets are state seabird sanctuaries — closed entirely above the high-tide line on the smaller one, restricted to a single small beach on the larger. Landing in any other spot is illegal and disturbs nesting wedge-tailed shearwaters, which dig burrows in the soft volcanic soil.
