Olomana Trail

The Olomana ridge rises sharply above the highway between Kailua and Waimanalo, forming three distinct peaks that look like a row of shark's teeth from below. The trail to the first peak (1,643 ft) is one of the most rewarding short hikes on Oahu — about 7 km return, with rope-assisted climbs through rainforest and exposed rock. The summit view stretches across the windward coast from Mokapu Peninsula to Makapuu.

The hike is moderately difficult and not suitable for people uncomfortable with heights or rope work. The continuation to peaks two and three is genuinely dangerous and not recommended. Access is through a private security gate, with public-access hours typically 7 am to 5 pm; check current rules before going. Plan 4–5 hours for the round trip to the first peak.

A story
Three Peaks (Olomana, Pakui, and Ainoni) gives the mountain its other name. The summit of the third peak, accessed by a narrow knife-edge ridge with ropes, has claimed multiple lives over the years. Most hikers — sensibly — stop at the first peak.
