Hagerman is a small town in the Snake River Canyon in southwestern Idaho, best known for the Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument just outside town. The fossil beds are one of the richest Pliocene-era fossil deposits in North America — the Hagerman Horse, a prehistoric relative of the modern horse, was found here in large numbers and is now the Idaho state fossil.
The Snake River here is excellent for fishing and the canyon walls are dramatic. The town itself is tiny but the national monument visitor center provides good context for the site, and fossil replicas are on display. It sits on US-30, which follows the old Oregon Trail route, making Hagerman a logical stop on a drive through southern Idaho.
