Pillar Falls sits in the Snake River Canyon between the Perrine Bridge and Shoshone Falls, but far fewer visitors find it because there's no road to the overlook — you have to walk to get there. The falls aren't a single dramatic drop like Shoshone; instead the river pushes through a series of basalt pillars and columns, creating a churning, fractured cascade that has an almost architectural quality.
The trailhead is accessible from the north rim of the canyon. The hike is short but the terrain is rocky and uneven, and the path to the canyon floor is steep. At high water the falls are genuinely impressive; later in summer the basalt pillars stand more exposed. This is a good option if you want to see the canyon geology up close without the crowds that gather at Shoshone Falls on summer weekends.
