The Hulman Building is a slim Art Deco office tower that forms one of the most distinctive elements of downtown Evansville's skyline. Completed in 1929 at the corner of Fifth and Main Streets, it represents the most confident phase of the city's commercial architecture. The terracotta detailing on the upper floors and the setback profile are characteristic of the style at its peak.
The building is associated with the Hulman family, one of the most prominent commercial dynasties in southwest Indiana, whose empire extended from the Hulman & Company wholesale grocery business (founded in 1850) to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The downtown streetscape around the Hulman Building preserves a good concentration of early 20th-century commercial architecture, with several other significant buildings from the same period within a short walk.
