Ohio River Waterfront

The Evansville riverfront runs along the Ohio River at the southern edge of downtown, giving the city one of its most attractive public spaces. The Riverfront Promenade extends along the flood wall constructed after the 1937 flood — the worst in Evansville's recorded history, which inundated most of the lower city — and provides a walking and cycling path with broad views across the river into Kentucky.

The Casino Aztar riverboat casino is moored permanently at the riverfront, and the historical marker collection along the promenade covers the city's development as a 19th-century river port. On summer evenings the waterfront is busy with walkers and cyclists, and the sunsets over the Ohio are notably good. The Evansville Museum sits a short walk from the river on Riverside Drive.

A story
Evansville's riverfront was transformed by a flood wall constructed after the devastating 1937 Ohio River flood, which put the entire lower city under water. The wall ended the flooding but also severed the city from the river for decades. A major renovation in the early 2000s restored access with the Riverfront Promenade, a linear park along the top of the wall that gives views over the Ohio into Kentucky.
