Franklin

Midwestern county seat south of Indianapolis, anchored by a courthouse square and Franklin College.

Franklin is a small county seat about 20 miles south of Indianapolis, sitting at the heart of Johnson County with the unhurried feel of a classic Midwestern market town. The Johnson County Courthouse anchors the square, and the blocks around it hold independent shops, antique dealers, and the beloved Artcraft Theater — a 1922 movie palace that still runs films and hosts live events.

Franklin College, founded in 1834, gives the town a quiet academic character unusual for a place this size. The campus is just south of the square and pleasant for a stroll. If you have time for a detour, the Nancy Kerlin Barnett Grave — a solitary 19th-century burial sitting on an island in the middle of a county road — is one of the stranger pieces of Indiana history you'll encounter.

The town's biggest moment of the year is the Franklin Fall Festival, held the first weekend of October on the square. It draws the community out for live music, a parade, and the kind of relaxed public gathering that feels increasingly rare. If you time your visit around it, you'll see the town at its most alive.

For travelers based in Indianapolis, Franklin makes a pleasant half-day or day excursion — small enough to walk comfortably, with just enough going on the square to fill an afternoon without rushing.
