The Saint Joseph River gives downtown South Bend its best walk. Paths along the water pass the old dam works that once helped power the city, then link toward the Century Center and the East Race area.
The river has had a rough industrial past, and it is still more urban than wild. Even so, the restored riverfront is a good way to see how South Bend has been trying to turn old infrastructure into public space.
