The Avenues is South Bend's most charming historic neighbourhood, a compact grid of tree-lined streets just south of downtown filled with craftsman bungalows and Victorian houses from the early 20th century. The area has attracted young professionals and independent businesses, and is the best neighbourhood for a relaxed evening walk.
The stretch along Mishawaka Avenue has the highest concentration of independent restaurants and bars. On weekends, it functions as something like a village high street — coffee in the morning, a bookshop browse, lunch, then a beer in the evening. It is also the most walkable neighbourhood for visitors staying downtown.
