Jack Trice Stadium

Iowa State Cyclones football stadium — the only major college venue in the US named for an African American athlete.

Jack Trice Stadium, locally just "the Jack", is the home of Iowa State Cyclones football. With a capacity of about 61,500 it is the largest stadium in Iowa and is unique in major college football for being named after an African American athlete — Jack Trice, who died in 1923 from injuries sustained in only his second game for Iowa State.

If you are in town on a home Saturday in autumn, even non-fans should consider going. The tailgate scene fills the surrounding lots from early morning, the stadium is genuinely loud, and the Cyclones rivalry with the University of Iowa Hawkeyes is one of the most heated in the country.

story: > Trice played as an Iowa State sophomore in 1923. The night before an away game at Minnesota he wrote a letter resolving to play hard "because the honor of my race, family and self is at stake." He was injured making a tackle and died two days later. The stadium has carried his name since 1997.
