Dubuque Museum of Art

The Dubuque Museum of Art occupies a 1911 Carnegie library building that has been thoughtfully expanded. The permanent collection focuses on American art with particular strength in regional Iowa work and a notable Grant Wood holding. The temporary exhibition program brings traveling shows from larger institutions that would otherwise not reach this part of the Midwest.

The building itself is worth a look: the original Carnegie structure has good bones — high ceilings, good natural light — and the later addition integrates reasonably well. The museum is free to enter for the permanent collection, and the café is a pleasant stop. For the size of city it serves, this is an impressively well-run institution.

A story
The museum's permanent collection includes a significant holding of work by Grant Wood, the Iowa-born painter best known for American Gothic. Wood lived and worked in the region, and the Dubuque collection includes several of his lesser-known paintings and drawings alongside the iconic work, giving a fuller picture of an artist who is often reduced to a single image.
