Mines of Spain State Recreation Area

Bluff-top trails, prairie, and lead-mining history south of Dubuque.

Mines of Spain State Recreation Area protects a sweep of Mississippi River bluffs, woodland, prairie, and old lead-mining ground just south of Dubuque. The name reaches back to Julien Dubuque and early European mining in the region, but the place is as much about walking, birdlife, and river views as history.

For travelers, it is one of the best ways to understand Dubuque's setting beyond the downtown riverfront. The trails vary from easy interpretive walks to longer bluff routes, and the Julien Dubuque Monument gives the sort of broad view that explains why this bend of the Mississippi mattered.
