Kinnick Stadium

The University of Iowa's football stadium sits a kilometre west of the Pentacrest and seats nearly 70,000 — a number that on a fall Saturday makes it the eighth-largest city in Iowa for an afternoon. Hawkeye football is the city's biggest single event, and game-day tailgating fills the surrounding lots from dawn.

If you are not in town for football, Kinnick is still worth the short walk for the bronze statue of namesake Nile Kinnick — Heisman winner in 1939, navy pilot killed in 1943 — and for the view back toward the campus from the upper deck on a non-game day.

A story
Between the first and second quarters of every home game the entire 69,000-seat stadium turns and waves up at the children's hospital that overlooks the field from across the street. The Hawkeye Wave started spontaneously in 2017 and has been a fixture ever since.
