The Chase County Courthouse in nearby Cottonwood Falls is one of the best architectural side trips from the preserve. Built in 1873, it is a confident limestone landmark from a county that has never been large but has always known how to make stone look permanent.
Stop here if you are driving the Flint Hills Scenic Byway. The courthouse square and surrounding streets make a gentle contrast to the open prairie just up the road.
