Bardstown

Kentucky bourbon town with Federal houses, whiskey museums, and a handsome old courthouse square.

North America > United States > Kentucky > Bardstown

Bardstown is the kind of Kentucky town that makes bourbon feel less like a brand and more like a landscape. It sits southeast of Louisville in the rolling Bluegrass, with a walkable courthouse square, old brick buildings, distillery warehouses nearby, and enough 19th-century architecture to make a slow afternoon worthwhile.

The town calls itself the Bourbon Capital of the World, and for once the slogan has weight. Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience is on the edge of town, Willett and Barton are close by, and the Oscar Getz Museum of Whiskey History gives the industry some historical backbone beyond tastings and gift shops.

Bardstown is not only bourbon. My Old Kentucky Home ties the town to Kentucky's state song and old plantation mythology, while the Civil War Museum and the historic district fill out the day. It is a strong stop between Louisville, Lexington, and Mammoth Cave, especially if you want a small town with a clear sense of itself.
