Madisonville

Western Kentucky county seat shaped by coal mining, with a modest downtown and nearby Pennyrile forest

Madisonville is the county seat of Hopkins County in western Kentucky, a small city that grew around coal mining and manufacturing. It sits in the Western Kentucky Coal Field region, and like many towns in this area, it has had to adapt as the coal industry contracted. The city has a modest downtown with a few historic buildings and serves as a regional centre for the surrounding rural area.

For travellers passing through on US 41 between Evansville and Nashville, Madisonville is a functional stop. There is not a great deal of specific tourist interest here, but the surrounding countryside has the quiet beauty typical of western Kentucky, and Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park about 20 km to the south offers camping, fishing, and hiking in a pleasant setting.
