The Red Mile

A harness-racing track founded in 1875 and named for the brick-red colour of the clay surface. It is the second-oldest functioning track in the United States and the fastest mile track for trotters and pacers in the world. Live racing meets run for a few weeks each spring and autumn, with the Kentucky Futurity in October the prestige event. The complex was expanded in 2015 to include a casino with historical horse racing terminals. Less of a tourist destination than Keeneland but worth a visit if you want to see harness racing — sulky drivers behind a single trotter, completely different sport from thoroughbred flat racing.
