NuLu (East Market District)

NuLu — New Louisville — is what happened when artists moved into the old East Market District warehouses and the restaurants and boutiques followed. The neighbourhood roughly covers East Market Street between Story Avenue and Shelby Street, and it is the most rapidly evolving part of Louisville: the kind of place where a building that was a printing plant ten years ago is now a bourbon bar with a food hall upstairs.

The dining scene here is particularly strong: a cluster of ambitious restaurants has made NuLu one of the better eating destinations in Kentucky, strong on farm-to-table cooking and local bourbon-based cocktails. The galleries along Market Street show serious contemporary work. On First Fridays, galleries open late and the neighbourhood gets a street-festival energy that draws the whole city.
