Bangor City Forest

The Bangor City Forest is a 680-acre urban woodland with 17 miles of maintained trails, sitting within the city limits just east of downtown. The forest offers walking, running, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing depending on the season. The trail network ranges from easy flat loops to more demanding terrain, all well-marked.

The City Forest adjoins the Thomas Hill Standpipe at its western edge, and the combined visit — standpipe viewpoint plus a forest walk — makes for a very satisfying afternoon. The forest is open year-round and free to use. In winter, the trails are groomed for cross-country skiing. Dogs are welcome on leash.

A story
The City Forest was established in 1969 on land that had been city-owned since the 1890s, when it was used as a watershed protection area. It remains one of the largest urban forests in the eastern United States — over 680 acres within the city limits.
