Stephen King's House

Stephen King's Victorian mansion on West Broadway is the city's most famous address. The elaborate wrought-iron fence, decorated with bats, spiders, cobwebs, and a three-headed dragon, makes it unmistakable. King bought the house in 1980 and lived here for decades, writing many of his most famous novels inside. He and his wife Tabitha have since donated the property to the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation, which will use it as a writer's retreat.

The house is private property and not open for tours — you can walk along the sidewalk and photograph the fence from the street, which is what most visitors do. The neighbourhood around it is Bangor's best-preserved Victorian residential area, with large ornate houses from the lumber-baron era. Walking a few blocks in any direction gives you a sense of the prosperous Bangor that existed before the lumber trade collapsed.

A story
King bought this house in 1980, and his presence transformed Bangor into a literary pilgrimage destination. The wrought-iron fence he installed — decorated with bats, spiders, and a three-headed dragon — was designed by local artist Terry Steel. The Bangor Daily News once reported that the house attracts more tourist visits than any other site in the city.
