Goat Island Light

1835 lighthouse visible from Cape Porpoise harbour, accessible by kayak

Goat Island Light stands on a small island just off Cape Porpoise, its white tower and red-roofed keeper's house visible from the Cape Porpoise harbour and from the ocean approach. Built in 1835, the current lighthouse structure dates from 1859. It still operates as an active navigational aid. The island itself is owned by the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust and can be reached by kayak or canoe at low water; landings are permitted.

From the Cape Porpoise pier, the lighthouse makes for a scenic backdrop in any weather — it's particularly dramatic in winter when the Atlantic surf breaks around the island's granite ledge. Sea kayak tours from local operators include it as a destination, and paddling around the island gives a good view back toward the Cape Porpoise harbour and the Maine coastline.
