Eating Out in Kennebunkport

Kennebunkport's food scene is dominated by seafood — specifically lobster, in every possible preparation. The region is among the best places in the world to eat fresh Maine lobster, and even the tourist-facing restaurants around Dock Square keep quality high when the raw material is this good.

The Clam Shack (2 Western Avenue, at the Kennebunk River bridge) is the most famous address: a tiny walk-up window that has been serving fried clams and lobster rolls since the 1960s. The lobster rolls are split-top, cold with mayo, and widely considered among the best in Maine. Expect a line in summer.

Nunan's Lobster Hut in Cape Porpoise is the local institution for whole boiled lobster — a no-frills boathouse on the harbour that has been doing the same thing since 1953. Cash only; BYOB; no reservations. Arrive early.

The White Barn Inn restaurant is at the other end of the spectrum — a converted barn with a formal tasting menu, national press attention, and prices to match. It's one of the better fine-dining rooms in New England.
