The Clam Shack

Legendary walk-up window for fried clams and lobster rolls

Address 2 Western Avenue, Kennebunk, ME 04043

A tiny white shack at the bridge between Kennebunk and Kennebunkport that has achieved a degree of national fame entirely out of proportion to its size. The Clam Shack has been serving fried clams and lobster rolls from a walk-up window since the 1960s, and both are still the reason to be here. The fried clams are whole-belly — none of the clam strip substitution that's become common elsewhere — and are cooked to order with genuine care.

The lobster rolls are cold, on a split-top bun, with fresh lobster and a light hand with the mayo. Multiple evaluators over multiple years have called them the best in Maine. Eat at the picnic tables by the river in summer, watching the Kennebunk River traffic go by. The line can be substantial in July and August; it moves quickly.
