Cape Porpoise

Quiet fishing village east of Kennebunkport with lobster boats and harbour walks

Cape Porpoise is Kennebunkport's less-visited neighbour, a proper fishing village about 5 km east of Dock Square. The harbour is still working — lobster boats go out every morning, the pier smells of brine and fuel, and the small fleet comes back in the afternoon. It's the least touristy part of the Kennebunkport area and the better place to eat lobster: Nunan's Lobster Hut on Route 9 is a legendary no-frills place that has been boiling lobsters since 1953.

The offshore lighthouse — Goat Island Light, built in 1835 — is visible from the pier. A short walk around the harbour takes you past working boat sheds and net stores. Cape Porpoise is the original English settlement of what became Kennebunkport, founded in 1629, though little of that antiquity is visible today.
