Baltimore is a serious eating city. Crab cakes get the attention, but the scene stretches from Little Italy delis to Afghan restaurants on North Charles Street. Fells Point and the Inner Harbor have the density, but some of the best meals are a short drive into the neighbourhoods.
Downtown & Little Italy Area
Vaccaro's, 222 Albemarle Street. An authentic Italian deli and pastry shop, Vaccaro's is a Baltimore institution. Giant cannoli, enormous tiramisu, and gelatos that draw lines stretching down the block. Go before dinner — this is an afternoon snack destination, not a sit-down meal.
Fells Point Area
Fells Point is quintessential Baltimore — an old harbour neighbourhood where cobblestone streets meet waterfront restaurants and the seafood is always fresh.
Kali's Court, 1606 Thames Street. One of the nicest seafood dining spots in Baltimore, with gorgeous mahogany and brick interior. The raw oyster plate is a must, and the fish is always fresh and prepared with inventive sauces. Try the baklava for dessert.
North Charles Street & Johns Hopkins Neighbourhood
Worth the short drive from downtown. North Charles Street has some of Baltimore's best restaurants lined up in easy walking distance.
Helmand, 806 N. Charles Street. A beloved Afghan restaurant that has been a Baltimore favourite for years. Start with the aushak or bowlani, then try the kaddo borawni — twice-cooked baby pumpkin with yogurt sauce. The lamb with tomato sauce and creamy spinach is the standout entree. Finish with Turkish coffee.
Tapas Teatro, 1711 N. Charles Street. Spanish tapas served on small plates, so you can try everything. The chorizo risotto cakes and grilled lamb chops with rhubarb sauce are highlights. Start with a pitcher of sangria.
