Federal Hill Park

Federal Hill Park is a small hilltop park just south of the Inner Harbor that provides the best panoramic view of downtown Baltimore — the basin, the World Trade Center, the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the distance, and the urban skyline compressed into a single frame. It is one of those views that makes you understand a city's geography instantly.

The park itself is popular with joggers, dog walkers, and people who want to eat lunch with a view. The surrounding Federal Hill neighbourhood is pleasant for an afternoon walk — brick rowhouses, local restaurants, and the Cross Street Market a few blocks south. The park is freely accessible at all hours.

A story
Federal Hill takes its name from the celebration held here on May 1, 1788, when Baltimore citizens climbed the hill to celebrate Maryland's ratification of the US Constitution. The festivities included a replica ship being pulled through the streets — the "Federalist" — and a general outpouring of relief that the new republic seemed to be actually taking shape. The hill also served as a Union Army fort during the Civil War, with cannon aimed at the city below.
