The Peale

The Peale is a neoclassical building from 1814 that holds the distinction of being the oldest purpose-built museum in the United States. After a comprehensive renovation completed in 2022, it reopened as a community museum focused on Baltimore history and local stories, with a particular emphasis on underrepresented communities and Baltimore's working-class history.

The building itself is worth seeing — the renovated interior preserves historic elements while creating a functional contemporary museum space. It is in the city's historic downtown core, near the War Memorial Plaza and City Hall, and makes for an interesting pairing with a walk through the old commercial district.

A story
The Peale is the oldest purpose-built museum building in the United States, opened in 1814 by Rembrandt Peale, a son of the painter and naturalist Charles Willson Peale. Rembrandt used it to display his father's enormous natural history collection and his own portraits of American presidents and founding fathers. It later became Baltimore's first city hall, then various public buildings, before reopening as a community museum in 2022 after a five-year renovation.
