Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art

Dedicated picture-book art museum founded by the author of The Very Hungry Caterpillar

A genuinely lovely museum, the first in the United States dedicated solely to picture-book art. Three gallery spaces show rotating exhibitions of original artwork from children's books, plus a permanent space for Carle's own work. There is an art studio where children (and adults) can paint and make collages, and a library of picture books to read.

It sits on a former apple orchard at Hampshire College in South Amherst, about ten minutes south of the centre by car. Closed Mondays; quieter on weekday mornings. Allow two hours with kids, less without.

A story
Eric Carle and his wife Barbara founded the museum in 2002 because Carle felt picture books were not taken seriously as an art form. The collection includes original artwork by Maurice Sendak, Beatrix Potter, Leo Lionni, and Carle himself — including the original collages used to make *The Very Hungry Caterpillar*.
