Strong House Museum

Amherst's oldest surviving house, now home to the historical society

Built in 1744 for Nehemiah Strong, this is the oldest surviving house in Amherst — a sturdy two-storey clapboard saltbox with the small windows and low ceilings of its period. The house has been a museum since the 1930s and is run by the Amherst Historical Society.

Inside, period rooms show how a New England farming family lived in the mid-18th century. The collection is small but well chosen and includes some of Simeon Strong's original furniture (he was the lawyer who bought the house in 1773 and bequeathed it with the stipulation that none of the original walls could be torn down). Open seasonally, typically May to October; check the historical society website for hours.
