West Cemetery

Old town cemetery where Emily Dickinson is buried

A small, walkable 18th-century cemetery a few minutes' walk north of the town common, where Emily Dickinson is buried alongside her parents, her sister Lavinia, and her brother Austin. Dickinson's plot is in the northwest corner of the cemetery, set behind a low iron railing and usually marked by visitors' offerings — flowers, pebbles, occasionally handwritten poems.

The astronomer David Todd and his wife Mabel — the editor responsible for the first published editions of Dickinson's poems — are also buried here, in a separate plot. The cemetery is open during daylight; a short, atmospheric stop.

A story
Dickinson's casket was carried on foot the short distance from the Homestead to the cemetery on 19 May 1886. Per her wishes, six Irish workers from her father's estate served as pallbearers. The simple white headstone reads: *Called back.*
