Fort Phoenix State Reservation gives New Bedford a good half-mile of Buzzards Bay shoreline, with sand, open water, and a bit of Revolutionary War history in the same walk. The old fort ramparts sit beside the beach, making this a simple place to swim, picnic, and look back across the harbour.
