New Bedford Art Museum

The New Bedford Art Museum at 608 Pleasant Street focuses on regional and contemporary art, with a particular emphasis on the marine and maritime traditions that shaped this city. The permanent collection includes works associated with the Luminism and Hudson River School traditions alongside newer acquisitions, and rotating exhibitions change every two to three months. The museum has expanded and renovated in recent years, with doubled gallery space and improved accessibility.

Recent shows have included William Bradford's Arctic paintings alongside contemporary Indigenous artists responding to the same landscapes — a pairing that puts the 19th-century whaling worldview in pointed dialogue with the people most affected by the industry's legacy. Entry is reasonably priced, and the building itself is part of the Central New Bedford Historic District. It is a pleasant complement to the Whaling Museum for visitors who want more art alongside the history.
