Bartlett Mall and the Old Hill Burying Ground

Frog Pond, a Greek Revival courthouse, and 17th-century gravestones

The Bartlett Mall is the long green space below the Superior Courthouse — a sloping park around a tear-shaped pond (the Frog Pond), graced by old elms and oaks. The Greek Revival courthouse at the top, completed in 1805 with later expansions, is one of the oldest still-active courthouses in the United States.

On the opposite side of the courthouse sits the Old Hill Burying Ground (1729), the most evocative of Newburyport's old graveyards. Slate stones with winged death's-heads, willow-and-urn carvings, and the graves of revolutionary-era ministers and merchants face out over the city. Bring a flashlight at dusk in October.
