The Botanic Garden is not a separate institution but encompasses the entire Smith College campus — a 147-acre living collection of trees, shrubs, and perennial plantings. The star attraction for non-botanists is the greenhouse complex, which contains a cactus and succulent house, a tropical house, and a palm house, all open free to visitors.
The outdoor campus features a Japanese garden, a pond garden, and a meadow. The tree collection is exceptional — it was laid out by the Olmsted firm and includes specimens planted in the 1870s. In spring the bulb displays along the pathways are the best in the Pioneer Valley.
