Northampton's appeal is in the texture of its downtown rather than any single attraction — Main Street is one of the best-preserved and most independent-minded commercial streets in New England. But there are real draws: Smith College's museum and botanical garden are excellent, the Academy of Music is a working Victorian theatre, and the Calvin Coolidge connections are more interesting than they sound.
