Fall (September–October) is the classic time — the foliage in the Pioneer Valley and along the Connecticut River is spectacular, the academic year is in full swing, and the city has its most animated character. Spring (April–May) is also good, with the college campus at its most beautiful when the gardens bloom. Summer is quieter (the students leave) but the farmer's markets, bike trails, and river access are at their best.
Winter is cold and grey, with average temperatures below freezing from December through February. Snowfall is substantial. The city still functions and has its charms in winter, but it's not the primary appeal.
The Northampton Pride parade in late spring (usually May or June) is one of the larger LGBTQ events in western New England. The Three-County Fair in Northampton's agricultural centre in early September is a traditional late-summer event.
