By bus — Peter Pan Bus Lines connects Northampton to Springfield (30 minutes), Boston (2.5 hours), and New York City (4 hours). The bus stop is at the train station on Main Street.
By car — Route 9 runs east–west through the city, connecting to the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) at Ware (30 minutes east) and to Pittsfield in the Berkshires (1 hour west). I-91 runs north–south along the Connecticut River, with a Northampton exit. Boston is about 1.5 hours east on the Pike; New York is 3 hours south.
By train — Amtrak's Vermonter and Valley Flyer services stop at the Northampton station on Main Street, connecting to New Haven, New York, and Vermont. Service is limited and slow but the trains run. The Pioneer Valley Transit Authority (PVTA) buses connect Northampton to Amherst and other college towns.
