Richard Sparrow House

Plymouth's oldest surviving house, now a compact historic house museum and craft gallery

The Richard Sparrow House is usually cited as Plymouth's oldest surviving house, with origins around 1640. Richard Sparrow was an English surveyor who arrived in Plymouth in the 1630s, and the remaining structure gives a rare look at the town before the more polished anniversary monuments arrived.

Today the house operates as a small museum and gallery of American crafts. It is a quick stop, but a worthwhile one if you are walking between Burial Hill, Town Brook, and the waterfront. The scale is modest, which is exactly what makes it useful: Plymouth's early history feels more believable in a low timber room than on a grand commemorative plinth.
