Salem is 25 miles north of Boston and extremely well-connected by public transport, which is by far the best way to arrive — driving into Salem in October is a serious ordeal. The MBTA Newburyport/Rockport Line runs commuter rail from Boston's North Station directly to Salem Depot, with trains roughly every 30–60 minutes; the journey takes about 30 minutes and is straightforward. The station is a 10-minute walk from the main tourist area.
By car, take Route 128 North to Route 114 East into downtown. Parking in October is expensive and difficult; the city operates a large garage off Riley Plaza, but it fills early on weekends. Salem Ferry from Rowes Wharf in Boston runs seasonally (May to October) and deposits passengers directly at Pickering Wharf — one of the more pleasant approaches if the weather cooperates.
Logan Airport is the nearest major hub, about 45 minutes to an hour from Salem depending on traffic. Boston's South Station does not serve Salem; you must use North Station.
