Salem is compact enough to cover most of its main sights on foot in a day. The historic core runs from the Peabody Essex Museum and the Commons at the north end down to the waterfront wharves and the House of the Seven Gables to the east. The witch-trials sites cluster in between. Beyond the tourist circuit, Chestnut Street is one of the finest Federal-era streetscapes in New England, and the Salem Willows park to the north offers good views across Salem Sound.
