Winter Island Park combines Salem harbor scenery with a long defensive history. The site includes Fort Pickering, a small beach, and Pickering Light, which has guided vessels into the harbor since the 19th century.
Most visitors come for the open views back toward Salem and across the water, but the old fortifications and remaining military structures give the walk more substance than a normal waterfront park.
