Downtown Jackson and West Michigan Avenue have a workable handful of independent restaurants — diner-style breakfast spots, a few solid pubs, and a couple of newer cocktail-and-small-plates places that have arrived with the slow downtown revival. The food trucks at the Jackson County Fair in August are worth a planning detour.
