St. Paul and Minneapolis are connected by the METRO Green Line light rail, which runs every 10 minutes along University Avenue between the two downtowns. This makes it straightforward to combine both cities in a single visit. The journey from St. Paul's central station to downtown Minneapolis takes about 40 minutes.
Within St. Paul, the bus network covers most of the city but frequencies are lower than in Minneapolis. A car is useful for getting to Como Park, the river bluffs, and Grand Avenue efficiently. The Lowertown neighbourhood and downtown are walkable; Summit Avenue is best explored on foot or by bike. Bike-share stations (Nice Ride) are available throughout the city.
Winters are harsh — temperatures regularly drop below -20°C in January and February — and walking distances that seem manageable in summer can be brutal in winter. The skyway system connects several downtown buildings, providing indoor walking routes between major destinations.
