Peanuts Gang Statues

St. Paul claims Charles M. Schulz — the creator of Peanuts — as one of its own, and the city has installed a series of bronze statues depicting Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus, Schroeder, and the rest of the gang at various locations around the downtown core and Rice Park. The main concentration is around Rice Park and Landmark Center, where the statues have been part of the urban furniture since 2000.

Rice Park itself is one of the most pleasant small squares in the city — surrounded by the Ordway Concert Hall, the Saint Paul Hotel, the Central Library, and Landmark Center, it functions as a year-round gathering place. The Peanuts statues make it a popular spot for families and provide a gentle reason to walk between downtown landmarks.

A story
Charles M. Schulz was born in Minneapolis in 1922 and grew up in St. Paul, where he delivered newspapers on a route that ran past the houses of some of his future characters' real-life inspirations. The red-haired girl who appeared as Charlie Brown's unrequited crush was based on a St. Paul woman named Donna Mae Johnson, who turned down Schulz's proposal in 1950.
