Como Park and Conservatory

Como Park is St. Paul's main green space, a large public park with a free zoo, a Victorian glass conservatory, paddle boats on a lake, and extensive gardens. The Marjorie McNeely Conservatory, opened in 1915, is a fine example of its era — a tall glass dome sheltering palms and tropical plants, surrounded by seasonal displays. Entry to the conservatory is free (donations requested).

The Como Zoo is small by major-city standards but well-maintained and genuinely free to enter. The polar bear enclosure and the great ape building are the main draws. On summer weekends the park is busy with local families, and the amusement rides and miniature train add a fairground quality. In winter the conservatory is a popular refuge from Minnesota's cold.

A story
The Marjorie McNeely Conservatory at Como Park is home to a Titan Arum — the corpse flower — that blooms unpredictably, for only a day or two at a time, emitting a smell of rotting flesh powerful enough to clear a room. When a bloom is announced, hundreds of people queue to experience it, making it one of the stranger public nature events in the American Midwest.
