A tiny, decades-old hole-in-the-wall on Farish Street, the historically Black commercial strip just north of downtown. The Big Apple has been serving pig-ear sandwiches and smoked sausage on dollar buns since 1939, and it has fed every generation of the Jackson civil rights movement — Medgar Evers had an office upstairs.
The pig ear is the thing to order: slow-boiled, layered with mustard, slaw, and hot sauce on a soft bun. Cheap, fast, and probably the most historically significant lunch you can eat in Mississippi.
