Hannibal

Mississippi River town best known as Mark Twain's boyhood home and the setting behind his fiction.

Hannibal is a small town on the Mississippi River, about 90 minutes north of St Louis. It is best known as the boyhood home of Mark Twain, and the town leans into the connection with enthusiasm — you can visit the house where Samuel Clemens grew up, explore the caves that inspired The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and walk streets that still feel like they belong in one of his novels.

The setting helps. Hannibal sits among rolling hills right on the river, and the old downtown has a genuine 19th-century character that no amount of tourism has managed to erase. Climb Cardiff Hill for the view, take the steamboat from the levee, and don't miss Rockcliffe Mansion on the bluff at the south end of town. Throughout the year the town hosts festivals celebrating old-time Missouri life, with arts and crafts, street entertainers, and a wholesome family atmosphere.
