The house where Samuel Clemens grew up is the heart of literary Hannibal, restored to its 1840s appearance and furnished with period pieces that match what we know of the Clemens family's modest life. You can peer into Sam's bedroom and the kitchen where his mother cooked, and the famous whitewashed fence runs along the side of the building.
The ticketed visit also includes the museum gallery on Main Street, the J. M. Clemens Justice of the Peace Office where Sam's father worked, and the Becky Thatcher House across the street. Allow about two hours for the full circuit.
